The Need…
A
study funded by the City of Boise in March of 2000 called
“Demand Treatment”
found that
“rates
of alcohol and drug abuse are worse in Boise than in the rest of the state
and nation….Key informants estimate that some 310-330 persons per month
are in need of detoxification and are seeking help to break their
addiction.”
“In
Boise city alone, there were 1200 drunk driving arrests, 1600
alcohol/drug related accidents or injuries, 2400 calls for alcohol
intoxication or drug overdose emergencies. There were also 2800 calls for
domestic violence, 86 suicides of 129 attempts. Drugs or alcohol are
typically a contributing factor in these calls as well.”

The Immediate Goals of Detox...
* To
provide a safe withdrawal from alcohol and/or other drugs of dependence
and enable the person to become alcohol and drug free;
* To
provide withdrawal that is humane and protects the persons’ dignity; and
To prepare the
person for ongoing treatment of his or her alcohol and/or other drug
dependence.
The Program...
Will be a
Clinically Managed Residential Detoxification Program
(ASAM Level
III-2-D) which is a social setting detoxification program.
People need a safe
environment to detoxify, away from their “triggers”.
The Solution...
Detoxification is the first step in a continuum of services that comprise
the solution.... Second Chance Triad with Detox

The
Cost of No Detox Services
Local city law enforcement agency estimates that at
least $300,000 per year in officers’ time is spent providing custody for
incapacitated persons in need of detox because there is no available detox
bed.
The hospital is simply too expensive an alternative
to provide this environment.
The cost to detoxify at a hospital is estimated to
be $700-1200 per day. People who detoxify in jail usually exit with
more problems than when they entered. This does not
support an individual that is trying to break a cycle of substance use.
Once people are released from jail they have often lost their lease,
are behind on bills, may have lost their jobs, spouse or significant
other, children, etc. A detox program should support individuals in
breaking their addiction, while still pursing their normal lives.
Detoxification from alcohol takes 3-5 days.
Methamphetamine takes 10-20 days.
Drugs and alcohol are a factor in 87% of the crimes
in Idaho according to direct surveys of our jailed inmates.
Treatment works; It saves $7.00 for each dollar invested.
