Clean & Sober Housing

SHIP provides safe, clean and sober housing for persons in recovery, utilizing a modified Oxford House Model.  The first men's  House in Idaho opened up August 17, 2001 in Boise, Idaho.  Since that time eight additional men's houses and one women's house have opened in the Boise area.  These modified Oxford Houses, now called Clean and Sober House, are popping up throughout the state, including Sandpoint, Coeur d' Alene, Jerome, Pocatello, and Twin Falls.  Other houses are planned for Lewiston &Nampa/Caldwell.

The Fresh Start Oxford House Chapter, comprised of all the Oxford Houses in the Boise area was organized in April of 2002.  The Chapter is charged with quality assurance, mutual support and the expansion of new houses.

SHIP serves as the central clearinghouse for applications and technical assistance for communities and residents alike.

Clean and Sober Houses  are self-sustaining, democratically run recovery houses for persons who are in recovery from substance abuse and/or alcoholism.  Clean and sober houses are single family dwellings that are rented from private landlords in communities by groups of recovering individuals desiring to live together in a supportive environment that is alcohol and drug free.  Each house is self-run and self-supported following a standardized system of democratic operation.

The concept underlying Clean and Sober Housing is the same as the one underlying Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous — addicted individuals can help themselves by helping each other abstain from alcohol and/or drug use one day at a time for a long enough time to permit a new set of values to be substituted for the values of a lifestyle in which alcohol and/or drugs were used.

Every  House must uphold these three basic requirements:

bullet

The house must be democratically self-run by the residents through weekly house meetings.  All decisions are made by the residents who hold various positions, such as president, secretary, comptroller, treasurer and coordinator, to ensure smooth operation of the house
.

bullet

Each House is responsible for all the household expenses.

bullet

The House must immediately expel any member who returns to using drugs or alcohol.
