SHIP has found that once clean and sober housing is established, the next step is securing employment. Through innovative and inclusive partnerships SHIP helps those in recovery to develop skills, find jobs and rebuild lives.
"The price of law and order keeps going up. It makes the price of prevention look better every day. The news that the state may need to spend more than $1 billion -- that's $1,000,000,000 -- on new prisons only underscores the value of keeping people out of prison in the first place. "

In May of 2005, SHIP opened the Second Chance Building Materials Center in Boise’s Linen District to create jobs and fund the expansion of treatment options. The Center employs many of the current and/or former residents of SHIP housing.
Center employees also do deconstruction services for building contracting and remodeling projects and re-manufacture recycled materials into new products, including custom sheds and playhouses.
SHIP is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and Association of General Contractors. We can provide asssitance in the processs of identifying and sorting materials salvaged through deconstruction projects and construction site recycling. SHIP also has experience in providing LEED documentation for Materials and Resource credits.
The Second Chance Building Materials Center is the area’s only home improvement store that sells recycled and donated building materials. Store Builder Memberships receive a 10 percent discount on labor. Sustaining members receive a 20 percent discount.
The entire construction process -- from the raising of a new structure to the tearing down of an old building to make way for a new one -- can generate a lot of waste.
Approximately 33 percent of the waste that goes into the landfill is construction waste. -- much of this waste still has a useful life. A solution to this problem is to recycle.
Employment in the construction business is often characterized by workers being hired for the duration of a construction project and then laid off as soon as the job is finished. Often there is a need for workers for short periods of time.
What SHIP offers both unskilled and trained temporary workers who are screened, evaluated and skill level assessed by an NCCER Certified Trainer prior to being referred to jobs. There is a benefit to both parties. Our workers get actual job experience while the contractor gets an opportunity to try the worker out and does not have to be concerned about the hiring process. Workman’s Compensation and other payroll expenses are covered by the STEP program. Our workers are legally employable, are drug tested twice a week and transportation is provided to the worksite by SHIP.
